Another but not so stable version would be, to glue big leather hide to the complete inside of the shield and do the above mentioned versiion only trough this inner leather part.

With this version, the shieldbody itself will not be be penetrated and you won’t see it from the outside.

But make sure to use a sturdy leather and a good shoe glue (Kövulfix), otherwise it may come off in heavy battle.
